The British government said it has scrapped plans to start selling in imperial units after a consultation showed 99% of supporters were in favour of remaining in the metric system.
After the United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020, the minister had considered changing the law to allow traders to the metric system to use the traditional British weighing system – which measures in pounds and pints, reports RTE.
If so, the decision will be returned after 98.7% of 100,938 people surveyed as part of an official consultation said they were comfortable with the use of metric units when buying or selling a product.
“The government has analysed all consultation responses received and reviewed the arguments for and against expanding the use of imperial units in domestic consumer transactions,” a statement from the department of business and trade said, reports RTE.
