Thousands of complaints made this year over ‘ghost buses’ around Ireland

Nearly 6,000 complaints were lodged regarding delayed services, cancellations, and so-called “ghost” buses during the first five months of this year, reports Breaking News.

“Ghost” buses refer to services that vanish from the live schedule without warning.

Figures released by the National Transport Authority (NTA) show that a total of 5,984 complaints were recorded up to May 19th, reports Breaking News.

Labour Party transport spokesperson Ciarán Ahern told the Irish Examiner the situation is highly troubling.

“If you want people to switch to public transport, you need to be able to rely on the bus services,” he said, reports Breaking News.

He warned that ongoing problems with reliability may drive people away from public transport and back into using their private cars.

Speaking on Newstalk, transport analyst Conor Faughnan said the current situation is simply unacceptable:

“It’s a pretty chunky number, but a run rate in the order of 300 a week. The bus timetable counts down faithfully from 10 to 1, and then it disappears. The bus just doesn’t turn up. It’s exasperating, and it really does inhibit the quality of the service,” reports Breaking News.
