Thousands of people are waiting to take their driving test as backlogs grow significantly

New data from the Road Safety Authority shows drivers in some parts of the country have to wait almost a year to pass their driving test, reports RTE.

Data released in late August showed nearly every driving centre in the country was experiencing significant delays, largely due to a shortage of examiners.

The average waiting time for a test in the country is 30.4 weeks

The longest waiting time at the Dún Laoghaire/Deansgrange test centre is 51 weeks.

Tralee, Co. Learner drivers who want to take the test in Kerry, or Mulhuddart, West Dublin have 45 weeks to take the test.

People booking an exam in Athlone, Co Westmeath or Castlebar in Co Mayo must wait weeks 20 and 21, reports RTE.

The shortest waiting time in the country is in Longford, where the waiting time is 18 weeks.

In April, the government approved the recruitment of an additional 75 driver examiners. However, they still need to appear in the stream, reports RTE.
