Thousands of social welfare recipients eligible for €2,000 grant as payment date confirmed

The Carer’s Support Grant is due to be paid to tens of thousands of people over the coming months, with the official payment date now confirmed.

The grant is an annual payment intended to acknowledge the commitment and work of those providing full-time care to family members or loved ones, and recipients are free to use the money as they wish, reports The Mirror.

People in receipt of three specific Department of Social Protection payments receive the Carer’s Support Grant automatically, although others may also qualify and can apply.

Below is everything you need to know, including the full list of those eligible to claim, reports The Mirror.

The grant is open to all carers providing full-time care to an older person or someone with a disability, regardless of income or PRSI contributions.

You are free to spend the grant however you choose. It may be used for respite care, but this is not a requirement, reports The Mirror.

While some carers put the money towards care-related items or services, others use it to help with everyday household costs such as bills.

When is it paid?

The Carer’s Support Grant will be paid on the first Thursday of June (June 4).

Full list of people who can claim the grant, reports The Mirror.

The Carer’s Support Grant is paid automatically to people who are receiving one of the following payments on the first Thursday in June:

Carer’s Allowance (full-rate and half-rate)
Carer’s Benefit
Domiciliary Care Allowance

The Carer’s Support Grant is not means tested, reports The Mirror.

If you are not receiving one of these payments, you may still be eligible for the Carer’s Support Grant.

You must be:

Aged 16 or over
Ordinarily resident in Ireland
Providing full-time care
Caring for the person for at least six months (this period must include the first Thursday in June)
Living with the person being cared for, or meeting specific conditions if living separately

During the six-month caring period, you cannot:

Work more than 18.5 hours per week (employed or self-employed)
Take part in education or training for more than 18.5 hours per week
Receive Jobseeker’s Allowance or Jobseeker’s Benefit
Sign on for credited contributions
Live in a hospital, convalescent home or similar institution

If your baby or child is hospitalised or in another institution for medical treatment, you may still qualify for the Carer’s Support Grant.

To receive the grant in this case, your baby or child must qualify for Domiciliary Care Allowance, reports The Mirror.

How much is the Carer’s Support Grant?

In 2026, the Carer’s Support Grant will be €2,000. In 2024, the payment stood at €1,850, reports The Mirror.

What happens if I care for more than one person?

If you provide care to more than one person, you will receive a separate grant for each individual you care for, reports The Mirror.

How to apply

If you are already receiving Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance, you do not need to apply for the Carer’s Support Grant.

The payment will be made automatically in June, reports The Mirror.

If you are not receiving any of the above payments, you must complete a Carer’s Support Grant application form (CSG1) for each person you are caring for.
