
In Dublin, thousands of people participated in a pro-Palestinian protest demanding that Israel be subject to sanctions and expelled from the UN right away, reports Sunday World.
One day following the official announcement of an election, the sizable throng marched through the Irish capital from the Garden of Remembrance towards the parliament buildings.
Before the Dail parliament was dissolved on Friday, the campaigners voiced their ire at the Irish government’s inability to enact laws intended to limit commerce with Israeli settlements in Palestine, reports Sunday World.
A number of speeches were given outside Leinster House by protesters, some of whom were clad in keffiyehs and brandishing banners and Palestinian flags.
Speakers spoke to the sizable gathering on the growing Middle East crisis while leading chants of “free, free Palestine.”
Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign chairwoman Zoe Lawlor said: “Palestinians know and we know – the ICJ has ruled it – occupation is illegal, apartheid is illegal, forced displacement is illegal and our Government has to name these crimes. Denying that it is apartheid and genocide is a way to avoid sanctioning these crimes and we won’t tolerate it any longer. We are sick of endless words of concern and condemnations, it is meaningless unless it is turned into action,” reports Sunday World.
At the eleventh nationwide demonstration since October 2023, demonstrators once more called for sanctions on Israel.
The march demanded “an end to Israel’s genocidal assault on the people of Gaza,” a halt to the use of Irish airspace for the transportation of weapons, and a halt to governments arming Israel, reports Sunday World.
They demanded that laws pertaining to arms embargo, the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill, and the Occupied Territories Bill be passed.
It further requested that the government reject any planned return of the Israeli ambassador from Tel Aviv and stop trading with Israel, reports Sunday World.
