For coercive control, assault inflicting hurt, threatening to kill, and falsely imprisoning his ex-partner for two and a half years, a 39-year-old man was given a six-year jail term, reports RTE.
In July, Gavin Doran, of Olive Crescent, Fruithill, Co Carlow, was convicted of using coercion to control Nicole Nolan, 34, from January 1, 2019, until October 31, 2021.
The jury at Carlow Circuit Court reached a unanimous decision.
Additionally, the jury found him guilty of wrongful detention from October 30 to October 31, 2021, and threatening to murder her.
On the same dates, Doran entered a guilty plea to assault causing hurt, reports RTE.
According to testimony given during the trial, Doran and Ms. Nolan had dated for five years.
Their small kid reportedly saw a portion of the October 2021 attack on Ms. Nolan.

According to Ms. Nolan, Doran had stabbed her in the head, bit her, and shoved his fingers down her throat that evening.
In July, the jury was told that Doran had threatened to put her in black sacks and hack her up, reports RTE.
Detective Garda Eoin McGrath gave Ms. Nolan’s victim impact statement, in which she stated that she will “never be the same again” and that she believed she would die the night of the assault.
David Bulbulia SC, the defence attorney, urged the judge to take into account Doran’s solid employment history and his potential to contribute positively to society.
In July 2014, prosecutors Niall Storan BL brought up Doran’s 19 prior convictions, which included false imprisonment, assault causing hurt, and threats of death against a former girlfriend, reports RTE.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly was informed by Mr. Bulbulia that there was a link between those convictions and his departure from the defence forces, of which he served from 2003 to 2014.
Judge O’Kelly informed the court that Doran was a jealous, compulsive man who kept Ms. Nolan away from her friends.
He stated Doran exhibited no regret for his actions and that the attack on her was brutal, reports RTE.
