Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence Helen McEntee has stated that the moment has come for a frank discussion on how Ireland safeguards its security and critical infrastructure amid an evolving global security environment, reports RTE.
She made these remarks while in Germany for the Munich Security Conference.
“Now is the time to have open honest conversations about security, about how we protect our people, how we protect our infrastructure and our shared values,” she said, reports RTE.
“Ireland is militarily neutral but neutrality doesn’t mean standing still. It doesn’t mean standing apart from others,” she added, reports RTE.
Ms McEntee explained that Ireland is enhancing its domestic readiness while deepening cooperation with the European Union and other international partners, especially as the country gets set to assume the EU presidency later this year, reports RTE.
She noted that attending the Munich Security Conference feels particularly relevant in light of the current widespread global instability.
Ms McEntee is scheduled to hold discussions with her European counterparts as well as representatives from the United States, Ukraine, and the Middle East on the shifting security dynamics.
“I believe people want these conversations to happen, they want reassurance that their security, their infrastructure, their future, that it’s been taken seriously,” she said, reports RTE.
“I am absolutely committed to responding that I’ll be reaffirming Ireland’s strong support for Ukraine and the need for a just and lasting peace. I’ll also be discussing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the importance of progress towards a two state solution, security from cyber threats to protect critical infrastructure,” Ms McEntee added, reports RTE.
