Today’s the day: Proposed new government hangs the balance of memberships’ vote

What happens today is anyone’s guess. Will Leo Varadkar, Micheal Martin and Eamon Ryan get into bed together and form a new government coalition – apparently going against the majority of the public’s wishes.

Or will the proposed deal get thrown in the bin and a so-called “political crisis” ensue.

One thing for sure is that up until now, things were not looking good for the proposed new government deal which would see Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party form a coalition.

Four members of the Green Party moved to reject the proposed plan for government, and urged others to do the same.

Saoirse McHugh, Sean McCabe, Julie O’Donoghue, and Tate Donnelly wrote an open letter to other party members to suggest that they too should reject the deal.

The Irish Mirror reports that the letter says ‘The Programme for Government does not offer the type of assurance necessary to give us confidence that the next government will take effective, fair and enduring climate action while also addressing the crises we face in housing, health, homelessness and agriculture.’
