Tough guy: Eamon Ryan says EU will pull out of Cop28 unless deal is met

Environment and Climate Change Minister Eamon Ryan said the draft agreement circulated by the COP28 presidency this afternoon would need to be reworked if it was to be adopted in Dubai, reports RTE.

Mr Ryan says that unless the text is radically improved, it may be grounds for abandoning it entirely.

However, he said it would not be a good or desirable outcome of the summit if the future of civilization was at stake.

“We can’t accept this text. It’s not anywhere near ambitious enough. It’s not broad enough. It’s not what parties have been calling for,” Mr Ryan said, reports RTE.

He added: “If we start with paragraph 39 which goes to the heart of whether we phase out fossil fuel, that one word ‘could’ just kills everything. We can’t have a get out of jail card for the fossil fuel industry and the current text would give them that,” reports RTE.
