Tough guy: Ireland will not provide a sort of ‘loophole’ for UK migration challenges, claims Harris

According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, Ireland would not “provide a loophole” for the problems caused by migration in other nations, reports RTE.

Speaking at a Monaghan event, Mr. Harris stated that although each nation is free to have its own immigration laws, he does not plan on letting other nations’ laws “affect the integrity of our own one”.

Following the revelation that 80% of recent asylum seekers entering Ireland entered across the UK’s land border with Northern Ireland, Mr. Harris made these remarks, reports RTE.

The British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, stated last night that this demonstrates the deterrent effect of his government’s so-called Rwanda policy.

The Rwanda strategy aims to discourage others from using small boats to cross the English Channel to England from Europe by sending asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on a one-way trip to Rwanda.

The Taoiseach declared that the British people should determine whether or not their measures are effective, reports RTE.

According to Mr. Harris, the government wants a strict, rule-based system that is upheld and perceived as upholding the law.

Tomorrow is the scheduled meeting between British Home Secretary James Cleverly and Justice Minister Helen McEntee, reports RTE.
