Gardaí claim that they will not ‘physically police’ Northern Ireland border

The Department of Justice has said that the Border would not be physically policed by Gardaí, reports Breaking News.

The move follows the Department’s statement that it will “free up” 100 gardaí for front-line enforcement activity, like as deportations, due to its own growing engagement in immigration registration obligations.

The Department later clarified in a statement on Tuesday that it might take up to 12 months to complete the necessary procedures to get all 100 gardaí ready for frontline duty, reports Breaking News.

It stated that “it is not the case that these gardaí will be assigned to physically police the border with Northern Ireland,” even if it highlighted how important an open border is to the populations on both sides of the island of Ireland.

This entails conducting a preliminary interview and taking candidates’ fingerprints.

Since April 8th, the Department’s Burgh Quay Registration Office—which is already in charge of Dublin—has taken over the registration functions for the first time for both in-person and online renewals of immigration residence permits for the counties of Meath, Kildare, and Wicklow, reports Breaking News.
