Tough guy talk: Tanaiste vows to tackle ‘campaign of arson and criminality’

In response to what he termed “an organised campaign of arson and criminality” targeting buildings that may be used to shelter refugees and asylum seekers, the Tánaiste has declared that gardaí will have all the resources necessary to crack down, reports RTE.

Speaking in Washington, Micheál Martin discussed the early-am arson assault on a building in Leixlip, County Kildare, which occurred yesterday morning. The incident was sparked by suspicions that the structure housed asylum seekers.

Around 1.30 am, a fire broke out in the seven-bed dormer bungalow known as Honeywood, causing significant damage.

Mr Martin said: “This is a criminal matter, and it seems to me that a campaign is developing of arson and criminality,” reports RTE.

“Government will review the situation to see if tougher measures are required if greater deterrence is required to stop this activity,” he added, reports RTE.
