Tragic: Five people killed including a number of young children, after a car went off Buncrana pier in Co Donegal last night

There was some tragic news announced late last night as the Gardai have confirmed that Five people, including a number of children, have sadly died after a vehicle went off Buncrana pier in Co Donegal.

According to various reports it is believed there were six people in the vehicle before it went into the water at approximately 7pm last night.

Gardai say a major search operation was conducted with the aid of a rescue helicopter from Sligo, along with lifeboats from Lough Swilly and Greencastle and a number of local fishing boats. There was a a frantic rescue operation as life guards fought to save those traped in the vehicle but they were only able to save the life of a baby who was handed through the window.

The young baby was quickly taken to hospital in Letterkenny, whilst the remaining five bodies which included primary school children were also removed from the water.  

A number of eye witnesses also described the scene as chaotic. It is not yet known what caused the car, believed to have a Northern Ireland registration plate, to end up in the water. A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of an incident that occurred at Buncrana Pier this evening.

“A car entered the water and a search of the area is currently ongoing.”No further information at present.”
