In one of the few such instances in US history the Presidential transition is to be delayed in a highly unusual event that hasn’t taken place since 2000, when a Supreme Court decision led to George W Bush becoming President of the United States following the media’s declaration of Al Gore as the winner.

The Washington Post reports that the administrator of the General Services Administration is a low-profile agency which runs Federal Buildings.

However, it plays an important role in the transition of power from on administration to another its signing over of paperwork, official turnover of millions of dollars as well as granting access to government officials, agencies and equipment to an income President’s transition team is essentially a formal declaration of the winner of a presidential race by the Federal government.

As yet Emily Murphy, the GSA Administrator has not written a letter authorising such action and has no plans to any time soon.

The last time this happened was in 2000 when despite the media proclaiming Al Gore as the President Elect after 36 days of litigation, a Supreme Court decision saw George W Bush seize victory from supposedly assured defeat.
