Treat for stargazers: Irish skies to be lit up by Orionid meteor shower tonight!

There is treat in store for stargazers tonight as the Orionid meteor shower is expected to be over Irish skies.

The phenomenon which occurs as result of the earth passing through the debris of Halleys Comet will be apparently best visible after 11:30pm.

Astronomers say the shower occurs as the debris hits the earth’s atmosphere at 148,000mph.

Those lucky to see the event will mostly see streaks of lights through clear skies.

Meanwhile Met Éireann say those in the Northern and Western areas may miss out on the event as some cloud cover is expected.
