Mr Ryan was a familiar face in Athlone, having run a clothing shop on Mardyke Street for nearly five decades before retiring in 2014. Friends, neighbours, and locals paid moving tributes online, remembering him as “a gentleman and great character.”
One tribute read: “Deepest sympathy to Deirdre and the girls on Nollie’s sudden passing. He was a warm, friendly man who always stopped for a chat, even with strangers. He had a great sense of humour and always shared good news. He won’t be forgotten. May he rest in peace,” reports The Mirror.
Another added: “My condolences to the Ryan family on the heartbreaking loss of Noel. He was a fantastic businessman and a kind, friendly soul. I only spoke with him a few weeks ago. May he rest in eternal peace,” reports The Mirror.
A third wrote: “Devastated to hear the sad news. Noel was a true gentleman and proud Athlone man. Sincere sympathies to his family and all who knew him.”
A fourth shared: “Noel’s sudden passing is deeply shocking. My heartfelt condolences to his family and many friends. He always welcomed everyone in his shop, especially us from the countryside. A man with a big heart, now reunited with his parents and twin brother Brendan. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace,” reports The Mirror.
Mr Ryan’s family have said funeral details will be announced later in the week.
