A genius to thousands of children in the UK and Ireland, writer John Cunliffe has sadly died at the age of 85.

It’s been revealed that Mr Cunliffe passed away in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, on September 20th.

He gave much joy to generations of children with his stories of postman Pat (whose surname was Clifton) and his black and white cat Jess, who lived in the fictional village of Greendale.

The beautiful little series was on BBC 1 television from the year 1981 until the 90s.

He also created and wrote the ragdoll show ‘Rosie and Jim’, who lived on a narrowboat with Pat, their driver.

Tributes have flooded in on social media with many declaring the author “a genius”.
