An Irish cyclist has lost his life while in Majorca, reports The Mirror.
The 59-year-old reportedly fell from his bicycle after “collapsing” on a road in Pollensa, located in the northern part of the island.
The incident occurred on the Ma-2210 road, which connects the well-known Port de Pollensa resort to the Formentor Lighthouse. The alarm was raised shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, reports The Mirror.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted to resuscitate him, but sadly, their efforts were in vain.
An investigation is now underway by the Civil Guard. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow to establish the exact cause of death, although at present, there is no indication of anything suspicious, reports The Mirror.
It remains unclear whether the deceased man was visiting Majorca as a tourist or was a resident on the island.
Majorca is a highly popular location for cyclists, both amateur and professional. The island’s roads are frequently filled with cycling groups, many of whom challenge themselves on the iconic Tramuntana mountain range in the west, as well as the flatter regions elsewhere.
Top cycling teams from across Europe often choose Majorca as a training destination due to its pleasant winter climate and consistent sunshine, reports The Mirror.
In a similar tragedy, Scotsman Graeme McGilvray, aged 49 and from Glasgow, was killed in March 2016 after a lorry hit him on a roundabout between Alcudia and Port Alcudia while he was cycling.
More recently, in September 2023, a 45-year-old British cyclist sustained severe injuries when he was struck by a lorry on the island. He plummeted over 30 feet down an embankment after being hit, reports The Mirror.
At the time, emergency services described his injuries—affecting his head, chest, and abdomen—as “very serious.” He was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.
That accident took place near Caimiri, a small inland town at the base of the Tramuntana mountains, an area known for its olive production.
Efforts to obtain further details from the Civil Guard regarding this latest cycling incident were unsuccessful at the time of writing, reports The Mirror.
