A man in his 60s has died and a woman was injured following a house fire in Co Cork during the early hours of this morning, reports RTE.

Emergency services were called to the fire at approximately 12.45am in the Hollyhill area.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the two-storey semi-detached home and found the man upstairs, reports RTE.

He was brought out of the house but was later declared dead at the scene.

A woman, also in her 60s, managed to escape the blaze. She received treatment at the scene before being brought to Cork University Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, reports RTE.

The home was extensively damaged in the fire, which was eventually brought under control by Cork City Fire Brigade. The area has since been sealed off for a technical investigation.

The man’s remains were taken to CUH, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out, reports RTE.

Gardaí have confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony Fitzgerald, who knew both the man and his partner, expressed his condolences, reports RTE.

Mr Fitzgerald described the man as “a lovely, quiet man” and said his passing had deeply affected the community.

He added that the local residents would come together to offer support to the man’s partner, reports RTE.
