The Co Mayo farmer Padraig Nally, known for his involvement in a shooting incident 20 years ago, has passed away, reports RTE.
The 81-year-old shot John ‘Frog’ Ward on his farm close to the village of Cross in October 2004.
Initially, he received a six-year prison sentence for the manslaughter of Mr. Ward, who suffered fatal injuries after being confronted on the property in October 2004, reports RTE.
Mr. Nally consistently asserted that he shot Mr. Ward to defend his home.
During the trial, it was revealed that he was living in fear at the time of the incident, having been targeted by thieves multiple times before, reports RTE.
A jury at the Central Criminal Court acquitted him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter in a trial held in 2005.
This conviction was later overturned in a retrial in 2006, resulting in Mr. Nally’s release.
He died this morning after having been ill for a while, reports RTE.
