An off-duty garda was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in Co Clare yesterday evening.
The collision happened shortly after 5.30pm on the R466 outside the village of Broadford, reports RTE.
Gardaà and emergency services attended the scene, where the passenger of the car was pronounced dead.
The garda, a man in his 50s, was based at a station in Limerick city, and his body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will take place, reports RTE.
The driver, also aged in his 50s, was airlifted to UHL with serious injuries.
The road remained closed this morning as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a technical examination of the scene, with local diversions in place, reports RTE.
Garda investigations into the circumstances of the fatal collision are ongoing, with an appeal issued to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
They would particularly like to speak to road users who were travelling on the R466 at Gortnaglogh around the time of the crash and may have camera footage, including dashcam recordings, reports RTE.
