A tragic incident unfolded in Dublin’s city centre on Thursday when a double-decker Bus Éireann vehicle, not in service at the time, collided with pedestrians on the pedestrianised section of North Earl Street around 12:30 pm. The bus mounted the area, struck several people, and came to a halt after hitting a lamp-post and a shop front.

The victim who lost his life was Frank Daly, a man in his 80s from the East Wall area in north Dublin. Known locally as a regular visitor to the city centre, often walking in for daily outings or lunch, he was described in community tributes as a kind, independent, and well-liked gentleman who enjoyed his routine trips into town.

Three other individuals were injured in the crash and taken to hospital. These included a male pedestrian in his 20s with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, a female pedestrian in her 30s, and the female bus driver in her 50s.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances, exploring possibilities such as a medical episode affecting the driver or any mechanical faults with the vehicle, which is set to undergo examination. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene near O’Connell Street.

Political figures, including the Taoiseach and the President, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished recovery for the injured, while thanking first responders. The incident has prompted discussions on pedestrian safety measures in busy urban zones.
