Tributes pour in for woman who is thought to be Ireland’s oldest person as she sadly dies aged 109




At the age of 109, the woman who was thought to be the oldest person in Ireland passed away, reports RTE.

Ruby Druce passed away quietly at her niece Carmel’s house in Castlefinn, County Donegal, Friday evening.

On New Year’s Eve of last year, Mrs. Druce celebrated her 109th birthday with a cake celebration and lived life to the fullest, reports RTE.

Last August, Mrs. Druce became the oldest living person in Ireland after Phyllis Furness, a Galway lady, passed away at the age of 109.

Mrs. Druce, who was born in 1915, survived two pandemics, two World Wars, and even caught the Spanish flu. In 2023, she also contracted COVID, reports RTE.

She was born Ruby Crawford to Elizabeth and George, the oldest of five children.

She began working at Porter’s Shirt Factory at the age of 14, where she remained for 48 years.

In 1956, Mrs. Druce wed Jim Druce, who tragically died 14 years later, reports RTE.

Being a teetotaller and nonsmoker, she only ever drank poitín once, and that was to treat a severe cold.

She made the decision in 2019 to attend Downton Abbey at the 103 theatre, reports RTE.

She recalls riding her bike to the movies for the first time in 1944, which was over 80 years ago.

Margo Butler, Mrs. Druce’s cherished niece who had looked after her in Letterkenny for a decade, passed away last year, reports RTE.
