As the country celebrates the end of Covid restrictions, one immunologist has questioned aspects of the government’s actions, warning that there is another “cloud on the horizon”.

According to RTE, Kingston Mills, the Professor of Experimental Immunology at Trinity College has said that he is surprised at how quickly the Government has gotten rid of the Covid passes for hospitality.

He has insisted that a new variant is emerging in Denmark and that Ireland has to be ready for it.  He said that this variant is likely to be more transmissible than Omicron and could become a significant variant.

The Covid passes have been a very divisive restriction over the past few months.  Even those members of the public who could show proof that they were vaccinated resented not being able to have a drink or dinner with their unvaccinated friends.  Restaurant and bar owners also found it difficult when they had to turn away long-standing regulars who chose not to take the vaccine. For this reason there was celebration throughout the country when this much-hated restriction was removed by the Government.
