Taoiseach Simon Harris stated that politicians need to “dial down the rhetoric” when it comes to demonising their opponents and called the shooting of Donald Trump a horrific act of political violence, reports RTE.
Mr. Harris described the incident as “shocking” while speaking in Dublin.
“I’m relieved that former president Trump is secure and well, but we must always call out political violence,” added Harris.
In addition, he expressed his condolences for the victim of the tragedy and the injured parties.
“My thoughts today are with the person who lost their life – the innocent spectator who went to a political event and found themselves caught up in this – and indeed those who are critically injured and I’m pleased that [former] president Trump is well and we send him our best,” reports RTE.
Speaking earlier on BBC Northern Ireland’s Sunday Politics Show, the leader of Fine Gael expressed his relief that the former US president is safe and healthy.
“Political violence must always be condemned and always be called out, and I must say it is quite alarming the rise that we’re seeing in political violence across the world. It’s only weeks since my Slovakian counterpart [Robert Fico] had an attempt on his life as well,” he said, reports RTE.
The Taoiseach declared that there was a “glimmer of hope” in the phone conversation between President Biden and Mr. Trump, two bitter political adversaries, following the incident.
“It’s so important that political violence is condemned and, and of course I want to send former President Trump our very best wishes and his family and all of those caught up in this horrific heinous political act last night,” he added, reports RTE.
