A tsunami alert has been issued after a powerful quake off the coast of El Salvador.
The quake’s epicenter was registered at a depth of 33km (20 miles), about 95 miles southwest of the Puerto Triunfo municipality in El Salvador, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the USGS, potentially dangerous waves are likely to form and sweep inland, though there are no reports of damage yet.
The quake struck just as Hurricane Otto made landfall in Nicaragua, bringing heavy rain and winds of up to 175 kilometers (110 miles) per hour along.
