Two arrested after siege on Tánaiste’s car

There were ugly scenes yesterday at Jobstown, Dublin, as a group of protesters surrounded Joan Burton’s car and kept her trapped for almost three hours. The protesters banged on the vehicle and chanted ‘peaceful protest’ and ‘shame on you.’

The Public Order Until had to be called, and the Garda helicopter was deployed.

After negotiations between Gardai and protesters, the Tánaiste was quickly switched to another vehicle and sped away from the scene at around 4pm.

Two men have been arrested after the incident, one for public order offences, and another for causing damage to a Garda car.

Communications Minister Alex White has said that the actions during the protest were ‘undemocratic’. Other sources say that the nature of the demonstrations was ‘menacing’.

Yesterday’s incident is just another nail in the coffin of this dying Government. They sowed the seeds of their own downfall when they bowed down to pressure from their European paymasters and introduced the water charges.
