Two British citizens who stayed at the same resort in Bulgaria die of Legionnaire’s Disease upon returning to the UK

Two British citizens have died of Legionnaire’s Disease, days after returning to the UK from Bulgaria.

The two men, identified as 43-year-old John Cowan and 75-year-old Brian Taylor, had stayed at the Hotel Kalofer resort near the Black Sea in Bulgaria on package holidays sold by Jet2.

Both men fell ill shortly after returning to the UK and passed away in hospital. Post-mortem analyses confirmed the cause of death as complications arising from Legionnaire’s Disease, a bacterial illness that causes pneumonia and other respiratory problems. The disease is treatable with antibiotics, but treatment must start quickly or the chances of survival diminish rapidly.

Jet2 has transferred tourists to other resorts in Bulgaria as a precaution.
