Two men admit attempted deception of dead man’s pension at Carlow post office

Two men pleaded guilty at Carlow Circuit Court to trying to defraud a postal worker last year over a deceased person’s pension, reports RTE.

The incident happened on January 21 at Hosie Post Office on Stapletown Road in Carlow.

Declan Haughney, 41, of Pollerton Road, Carlow, and his co-defendant, Gareth Coakley, 37, of John Sweeney Park, Carlow, were asked to reconsider before the trial began.

Two of the defendants pleaded guilty to attempted fraud.

They initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and each pleaded guilty to one attempt to steal Peter Doyle’s €246 state pension against common law.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly told the jury of nine men and ten women who took oath yesterday that their services were no longer needed and dismissed the jury, reports RTE.

He said the “somewhat bizarre circumstances” of the case would go to trial on Friday when both men were sentenced.

The judge also said that since the incident involved a deceased person, a victim impact statement should be considered.

He acceded to a request from Haughney’s lawyer, David Roberts, that the warden of Whitfield Prison should prepare a report on his client.

Hawney was held in further custody while Coakley was also held in custody, reports RTE.

Both men were summoned to appear again at Carlow Circuit Court on Friday.
