The two men who died when their aircraft crashed on Mount Leinster yesterday evening have been named as Bryan Keane (69) and Paul Smith (58).

The men, who were reportedly very experienced pilots, left Athboy Aerodrome in a Cessna 172. Weather conditions were said to be perfect.

A hillwalker alerted emergency services, though it is unclear whether or not the hillwalker  actually witnessed the crash.

The aircraft came down in a remote area known as Blackstairs Commons near Mount Leinster. There is no access to this area by road.

The bodies remained at the scene as of Sunday night.
