Two oil tankers sustained heavy damage after a suspected attack while sailing across the Gulf of Oman on Thursday.
The ships, which were carrying crude oil and chemicals respectively, were hit near the Strait of Hormuz, an strategically important region, as 20% of the world’s oil supply flows through it.
The tankers caught fire in the attack, but all crew members were safely evacuated.
It is unclear what method was used for the strike. A number of news outlets reported that the ships had been torpedoed, while others say that mines were involved.
The attack follows a similar incident in May, when four tankers were hit just off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
