A car drove into a crowded pedestrian zone in central Leipzig on Monday afternoon, killing two people and injuring multiple others in the eastern German city. The incident occurred around 5pm local time on Grimmaische Strasse, a busy shopping street filled with pedestrians enjoying a warm spring day.
Authorities confirmed that two victims died at the scene while three others sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Reports indicate up to two dozen people may have been affected overall, with emergency services rushing to the area to treat the wounded. A damaged Volkswagen SUV was reportedly seen speeding through the zone before the driver was arrested shortly afterward.
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung addressed the tragedy, expressing sorrow for the lives lost and the injured. Investigators are still determining the driver’s motive, with no immediate indication whether the event was deliberate or accidental. Police stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
This incident adds to a series of vehicle-ramming events in Germany in recent years, including the 2024 Magdeburg Christmas market attack. Local and federal authorities continue to investigate as the city grapples with the aftermath.
