Large public events, including concerts and sports games, are banned as Britain attempts to fight the coronavirus epidemic. The plans announced by the government are expected to take effect next weekend.
This happens 24 hours after Boris Johnson said that banning mass gatherings would not be an effective way to combat the spread of Covid-19. Similar emergency measures have been taken by several countries affected by the airborne flu virus, including Denmark, Italy, Switzerland and France.
A number of European countries have closed cinemas, theatres, pubs and clubs as well as schools, colleges and universities in order to limit distribution. The Prime Minister’s decision was made after the English football authorities postponed all professional meetings until April 3 and the Queen had cancelled a series of public engagements as a precaution.
