UK authorities probe theory that drone operator who caused widespread disruption at Gatwick Airport over Christmas may have been an ‘inside job’

UK authorities hunting for those responsible for the disruption at Gatwick Airport over the manic Christmas period may have had “deep” knowledge of airport layouts and operations, it has emerged.

The theory was put forward by experts who say the operator flying the drones appeared to have been aware of ‘blind spots’ where the drone could not be targeted by anti-drone equipment, and also seemed to have known to fly the device near the air traffic control tower, whose staff would be unable to capture it on camera due to a ban on mobile phones at the location.

Drone activity led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights during a three-day period, and despite extensive searches and house calls, police have not yet been able to track down the culprit.
