UK supermarket chain Morrisons have decided to get right of the “use by” date on most of its milk.

According to Sky News, the giant retailer instead intends to use “best before” dates on 90% of its own-brand milk.  Customers will be urged to use a sniff test in order to decide whether or not the milk is drinkable.

It is hoped that the plan will stop millions of pints of milk from being thrown away every year.  Morrison’s senior milk buyer Ian Goode said:

“Wasted milk means wasted effort by our farmers and unnecessary carbon being released into the atmosphere. Good quality well-kept milk has a good few days life after normal “use by” dates – and we think it should be consumed, not tipped down the sink.

Generations before us have always used the sniff test – and I believe we can too.”

If milk has been spoiled then it usually smells bad and can have a curdled consistency.  Milk is said to be the third most wasted food and drink product in the UK, after potatoes and bread.

A spokesperson for recycling charity Wrap has welcomed the move and said it hopes other retailers will follow them.
