Ukraine has got to win war against Russia, claims incoming EU foreign policy chief

Ukraine must prevail in the battle against Russia, according to Kaja Kallas, the candidate for the EU’s next foreign policy leader, even if she disagreed that the EU should establish a military branch, reports RTE.

During her confirmation hearing, Ms. Kallas quoted historian Timothy Snyder when she said, “A country must lose its last colonial war in order to improve.”

According to her, the EU must take all necessary steps to guarantee that “Russia loses its last colonial war,” reports RTE.

In response to questions on the crisis in Ukraine from certain pro-Russian MEPs, she stated that no one supported war, particularly not Ukrainians.

She continued by saying that permitting Russia to retain significant portions of Ukraine in the name of peace would only incite powerful nations abroad to attack their neighbours in an attempt to seize, reports RTE.

Following Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and its proxy war in eastern Ukraine, she claimed the suggestion for an instant ceasefire was comparable to the Minsk accords between Russia and Ukraine.

She asserted, however, that the Minsk Accords failed and just served as a pretext for Russian President Vladimir Putin to declare war on Ukraine once more.

“[Minsk] didn’t bring peace, it brought more wars. Therefore, we need to be in a position where Russia loses its last colonial war so that it doesn’t wage any wars anymore. That is why we have to make this effort now. If aggression pays off somewhere, then it serves as an invitation to use it elsewhere and we will have more wars, because all the aggressors, or would-be aggressors in the world, are carefully taking note that, okay, this pays off,” said Ms Kallas, reports RTE.

Regarding the Middle East, the previous prime minister of Estonia stated that David Ben Gurion, one of Israel’s founding fathers, had stated that the state of Israel was founded on the twin tenets of justice and security.

“You can’t have that without the existence of Palestinians in that country, as well as the existence of these values,” reports RTE.

“But if we look to history, then isolationism has never worked well for America. If America is worried about China, they should first be worried about Russia. We will have these dialogues with the United States, so I will not speculate on what America is doing or not doing. My intention is that Europe [should be] around those tables. When anything about Europe is discussed, we are not left out and we have a say. But when it comes to Ukraine, then the first ones who [should] have a say on how things could go or should go, are the Ukrainians,” Ms Kallas said, reports RTE.
