Ukraine’s superior tactics in Vuhledar are costing Russian invaders many valuable armored vehicles.
Ukrainian tacticians know that heavy Russian tanks can only move over roads, particularly at this time of year when spring weather turns unpaved ground into a quagmire of mud. Consequently, Ukrainian engineers leave roads open and clear so the enemy believes they’re safe. Unbeknownst to the Russians, sappers lay anti-tank mines on the fields surrounding the roads and tank-hunting teams lay in wait.
Once Russian tanks begin rolling down the roads, the tank hunters fire Javelin missiles to either destroy or disable the vehicles. When the surviving tanks scatter and move into the field in a desperate rush to flee, they run headlong into the minefields. And at that moment, Ukrainian gunners drop hot lead on the tanks, which are either immobilized by enemy fire or stuck in the mud. The result is absolute carnage and devastating losses.
