Ukrianian mother charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Ukrainian man in Cork

A 43-yr-old Ukrainian mother-of-one appeared at Cork District Court over the death of a man found unconscious in a car park near Cork Airport in the early hours of Sunday morning, reports The Mirror.

Ksenia Vasilenko was charged with dangerous driving, which resulted in the death of Andriy Nesterov at Cork Airport in Lehanaghmore on 8 October.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution was given by Det Garda Gary Brennan.

Gardaí objected to bail due to the seriousness of the charges and concerns that the defendant would pose a risk to aviation.

Defence lawyer Frank Buttimer said his client had come to Ireland with her five-year-old son to seek refuge amid the ongoing war in her country.

Mr Butimer said his client worked in local government administration in a town in central Ukraine before the war. She has no criminal history.

Ms Vasilenko said she was willing to submit to even the strictest bail conditions set by the court.

“I quit my job to save my life and my son’s life. I will do anything to be with my son as we have a very close bond. I promise I will not be leaving Ireland. I do not have relatives or friends who could accommodate us in Europe. I love Ireland and the Irish people”, reports The Mirror.

Judge Olann Kelleher remanded Ms Vasylenko in custody to come to the court again on 16th October.
