Richard Dexter, 38, of Highland Terrace, Southsea, previously admitted to seven counts of fraud and was found guilty of perverting justice.

He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison at Portsmouth Crown Court.

The court heard he persuaded Amrita Sebastian to part with money for a patent catalog which he said was completed fabricated.

Prosecutors said Dexter met Sebastian through the dating app Tinder in 2015 and shared intimate information to build trust, and she found him credible and believable when he told her he had extra money to invest.

He first scammed her out of £40,000 in 2015 when he said he bought a catalog of biopharma patents.

He later bragged that he was close to securing a £12m licensing deal with 3M, which he said would require an initial investment of £68,000.

The court also heard that, Ms Sebastian, who lives in Dubai, was approached throughout 2016 looking for money despite her poor health.

Police then found an investment report on his computer in which he falsely claimed to have assets worth £4million.

A fake license agreement created by a US legal documents website was also discovered on a USB drive.

The court heard that Dexter bragged about his tremendous wealth and the possession of a private jet.

According to the Metro, he admitted seven counts of fraud and was found guilty of misappropriation of legal process and possession of fraudulent objects after a court hearing in November.

At the sentencing hearing, His Honor Judge Mousley QC said Dexter never thought of Ms Sebastian. He was jailed for four years and six months. He was ordered to serve at least half of his sentence in custody. He is being compared to Tinder Swindler by social media users.
