The Medical Bureau of Road Safety have confirmed to the traffic corps that their new drug testing kits might not properly work when temperatures are 5c degrees of below.
Gardai have been advised that even in moderate weather their devices mightn’t work.
The kit use saliva samples to determine whether a driver has taken drugs such as cocaine, heroin and even cannabis.
The Medical Bureau said:
“At temperatures lower than 5C the analyser is capable of operating as it has the capacity to provide heat internally,”
“Where the analyser cannot achieve 5C, a ‘low temperature message’ will be displayed and it will not be possible to do a test.”
There could be many legal wrangles as a result of such faulty devices.
