Under pressure: Varadkar battling to stay on as Fine Gael leader after disastrous General Election

Leo Varadkar is set for battle to stay in his role as Fine Gael leader following the results the General Election.

Varadkar who was unanimously defeated in his constituency could face a motion of no confidence if his party are uninvolved in any future coalition talks.

Although Varadkar could be part of a grand coalition with Fianna Fáil, it seems that his fate rests in the hands of Sinn Féin who are now trying to form a Government which would leave Fine Gael in opposition.

Despite being backed to stay in his role as party leader by Paschal Donohoe and Simon Coveney, Varadkar could very well find himself ousted as a number of backbenchers will most likely be disappointed with the general election results.

Under party rules Varadkar would automatically face a vote of confidence if the party is not involved in any coalition talks.
