Local wildlife experts fear that up to 350 koalas may have perished during a wildfire that ripped through their habitat on the east coast of Australia.
The fire, believed to have been sparked by a lightning strike last Friday, burned through almost 5,000 acres in New South Wales, which holds a large koala population.
The fire is now out, and local conservationists are beginning to search the area to ascertain how many koalas might have survived.
Koalas tend to seek shelter from flames by climbing to the highest point in a tree, which often results in their death unless the fire just happens to pass them by.
