Up to 50,000 people will be evacuated in the German city of Hannover due to the discovery of several unexploded bombs dropped during the Second World War

Tens of thousands of residents in the German city of Hannover are set to be evacuated due to the discovery of a number of Second World War-era explosive devices.

Local authorities have drawn a complex evacuation plan, which will be set into motion on Sunday, May 7, at 9.00am local time.

So far, search teams have located five unexploded bombs (UXB). Once the residents have been moved away, bomb disposal teams will be deployed to attempt to defuse the explosives.

This will be the second largest such operation in Germany in recent times. Up to 54,000 residents in the city of Augsburg had to be evacuated on Christmas Eve 2016, after a large, British-made UXB was discovered during construction work.

Hannover suffered heavy bombardment by the Allies during Second World War, and a number of devices may have remained buried underground up to present day.
