The UPC service has announced plans to introduce new child safety filters on its home broadband connections, as part of a larger initiative within the home entertainment world to “take responsibility” on the issue of protecting kids from adult and inappropriate content in the web and elsewhere.

UPC will offer this as an “opt in’ feature, and will apply to around 350,000 UPC broadband customers.

The technology behind this plan will block pornography sites, and self-harm and suicide content from the UPC service, and will apply to laptops, tablets and smartphones accessing the web through UPC.

Recent figures published by the Central Statistics Office show that up to 90pc of Irish households with children have access to the internet.
