UPDATE WARNING: Ophelia’s first victims as tree falls on top of car in Waterford

Two people have been severely injured after a tree collapsed on their car in Anglosh, Waterford.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and have issued further warnings for public safety.

Schools, colleges and businesses remain closed today, or later,  due to the severity of the alerts.

Garda Inspector Conor Ó Murchu said: “This is an unprecedented nationwide weather event. We have reports of fallen trees and power lines and we all know the danger they present to the public.
“In an emergency we’re asking people to dial 999 or 112.”

The last storm of its kind in Ireland claimed 15 lives, mainly by falling trees and flying debris, and there are fears of fatalities from Storm Ophelia.

Warnings strongly urge people not to make unnecessary journeys, and to remain indoors until the storm has passed.
