The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will operate outpatient clinics for regular donors this week to avoid a yellow alert situation that would see hospitals cancel elective surgeries due to a lack of blood supply.
The service has issued a flash appeal as it needs an additional 5,000 donations over the next eight weeks, on top of the normal 17,000, to meet demand.
He said he had donated more blood than he had collected since the start of June.
