A US airstrike has killed a top Iranian general, a move that threatens to further destabilize the already frail geopolitical situation in the region.
Major General Qassem Soleimani, was killed today, along with one of his aides. Soleimani was the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, and was a known architect of Iran’s spreading military influence in the Middle East. Soleimani’s death is very significant indeed, as he was revered as one of the most powerful and influential figures in his country.
Iran has now vowed to exact a ‘crushing revenge’ for the action.
US officials have now urged all American personnel to depart Iraq ‘by any means necessary’ immediately.
