US basketball star Brittney Griner who was detained and charged with narcotics possession and smuggling for bringing cannabis-infused vape cartridges into Russia has been found guilty by a Russian court.
According to RTE, the highly publicised trial came to a conclusion on Thursday when the court found her guilty on all charges and fined her 1 million roubles (€15,652).
RTE reported that Russia’s state prosecutor had requested nine-and-a-half years in prison for Ms Griner, who said in her closing remarks that bringing the cartridges into Russia had been “an honest mistake”
After the sentencing, Ms Griner appeared sad and stony-faced, and said she understood the sentence.
US President Joe Biden weighed in on the sentencing, describing it as “unacceptable”. He said that Russia should release her immediately so that she could return to her friends and family. He also said that his administration would “work tirelessly” to bring her home safely.
It is believed that Ms Griner’s defence team will appeal the verdict.
