US Funeral home workers charged with the illegal sale of body parts

Two funeral home workers have been charged with the illegal sale of body parts in the US.

An investigation into the activities of a mother and daughter who respectively owned and worked at the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Montrose, Colorado, revealed the grisly side business that the pair had been engaged in for some time.

It is understood that the women, named as 43-year-old Megan Hess and her mother 66-year-old Shirley Koch, offered cremation and burial services but instead sold partial or whole bodies to third parties. The families of the deceased were then returned fake ashes, or remains from someone else.

The women now face six counts of mail fraud and three counts of illegal transportation of hazardous materials, and may be sent to jail for up to 20 years if convicted.

It is not clear who or which organization actually purchased the human remains, or for what purpose.
