US state of Alabama could hand out a 99 year sentence to those found guilty of carrying out an abortion as new laws are passed

The US state of Alabama, has become the seventh state to effectively ban abortion after new laws were passed on Wednesday.

According to reports in the US, the state overwhelmingly passed laws that will make abortion a crime.

Under the new laws those found guilty of carrying out an abortion could face a prison sentence of up to 99 years.

However exemptions will be made that will allow an abortion to take place if the life of the mother is in danger or the fetus has a fatal condition.

The new laws which are scheduled to be implemented in six months, come after the state of Georgia passed legislation to ban almost all abortions once a fetal hearbeat has been detected.

Meanwhile the states of Ohio, Mississippi, Iowa Kentucky and North Dakota have passed similar laws in recent months.
